A North Texas Salute to Jim Wright
(The Jim Wright Dinner)
The Mid-Cities Democrats created the biennial Jim Wright Dinner in 2007 to honor Speaker Wright’s three decades of service to Tarrant County and to the country. Because of his investments in the future, from our national interstate highway system to local flood control measures, we reap the benefits today. In 2007, Houston Mayor Bill White, now a candidate for U.S. Senate, was our keynote speaker.
2007 Media Presentation
This year, the Mid-Cities Democrats have partnered with the Tarrant County Democratic Party, to enable a larger event, thereby raising more money for our Jim Wright Scholarship, awarded to students attending Tarrant County College, a local community college. Speaker Wright chose the school, believing the funds would go furthest. Speaker Wright and this year’s scholarship winner will attend.
 
The Jim Wright Scholarship
Our Jim Wright Scholarship is awarded to a deserving student planning to attend or already attending Tarrant County College, northeast campus.
Speaker Wright served Tarrant County for 34 years. This scholarship is meant to inspire students to improve their communities, just as Speaker Wright did.
2009 Scholarship Awardee
The Jim Wright Scholarship Committee and the Mid-Cities Democrats Executive Board are proud to announce that Oliver Blankenship is our 2009 Jim Wright Scholarship awardee.
Mr. Blankenship is a current Tarrant County College-NE student and a 2008 L.D. Bell High School graduate.
Oliver plans to complete his basics at TCC then transfer to Texas Wesleyan for a psychology degree. He wants to obtain a Ph.D. and work with underprivileged families and senior citizens. He was a National Jr. Honor Society and National Honor Society member. His community service is lengthly, including bilingual tutoring and Meals on Wheels.
