Oh really? Two-thirds of Grapevine citizens prefer their current trash and recycling service?

Well, I may have paid for that answer, but I am sure not buying it!

The city of Grapevine (meaning taxpayers) paid more than $9000.00 for this survey, but no one I know – friends, fellow church members and co-workers, were surveyed. No one on the citizens group that has worked for more than a year on this matter was surveyed.

Our group asked to be a part of the survey, including formation of questions. There was not a single word in the survey on the benefits of improved recycling – reduction in emissions, reduction in landfill waste and reduction in unsightly curbside trash.

This survey was an expensive joke on this very serious matter. How disappointing.

Fellow citizens, if you feel that Grapevine should be the cleaner, greener city it claims to be, join business owners, environmental experts and families calling for change. Perry has got to go (Star-Telegram)

We Texans pay taxes to the federal treasury annually. We don’t need a governor who wants to turn down our fair share of federal funds for education.
Rick Perry, just like other politicians, says he represents his constituents. The only constituent he has is the party of no. Let’s just say no to Rick and vote in Bill White for governor.

What’s fair is fair and Grapevine’s current system of waste removal and associated fees is completely unfair.
If I don’t water my lawn every day of the summer, I don’t pay the same water bill as my neighbor who does.
Why should I pay the same waste bill as a neighbor who trashes plastic bags, yard waste and cardboard?
Mayor Tate and our City Council should pursue an incentive to trash reduction and let citizens decide how much they will pay, by how much they throw – that’s the pay as you throw system.
This system is a working success story in more than 7,000 U.S. cities. And it’s the right thing to do.

Michele Valdez’s column, “Waking up Dead”, describes how I felt after serving as election judge in the Primary elections!
It’s the duty of the election judge to set up, and conduct the election and make sure procedures are followed using every possible sign, form and envelope to direct, inform and account with a safety back up of paperwork; for the voter and their ballot. The Texas legislature voted to not pay election workers for training, but good souls come through every election to make sure our fellow citizens of both parties have the opportunity to vote.
On their own time, the election judge picks up a 20 lb bag containing the sign-in book the clerk flips through hurriedly to find your name, and has noted with 2 stamps who had voted in the last week of early voting in the same book, sometimes within 24 hrs of election day.
Tarrant County Election workers deliver to each polling location; two metal lockers large enough to transport a killer whale; with contents as precious! Each of those lockers contain 2 electronic devices protected in foam cases and with numbered seals.  Election workers must have access to the polling place at 6 am, no later, as it takes a full hour to setup, take the oath and “open the polls” at 7 a.m.
It’s a 17 hour day of civic duty. The hope remains that who ever wins the election, will wake up every day ready to serve the common good.

Voter ID back again (Star-Telegram)
This is ridiculous. (See: GOP race centers on voter ID bill, Wednesday) State Rep. Todd Smith complained to Republican Chairwoman Stephanie Klick for publicly saying that he might allow a provision so that voters could register the same day they cast ballots.
That could never work. How could a potential voter’s registration be verified before they vote? Is this the party of misinformation?
Another problem is how will someone without a photo ID obtain one? If they don’t have some type of government issued ID, will they have to pay for it? If so, that’s a voter tax and that is illegal. The government has to pick up the tab or just drop the whole idea.

The people didn’t vote (Star-Telegram)
Ralph Smith stated in his Jan. 12 letter that “we” voted down wasteful spending proposal for the Kate Baker Park building, a building that would have added to the quality of life for the residents of Richland Hills.
The truth is the residents were misinformed regarding the cost of the building and the available donated funds necessary to build it.
It would not have cost the residents any additional funds. The more than $200,000 donated for that project were returned to the donors.
Since the park building funds were donated, it would not have affected our city budget. Also the rental fees would have more than covered the upkeep of the building.
Smith and this dysfunctional City Council cannot see past the end of their noses when it comes to planning for the future of our city.
