DAVIS BEST FOR TEXAS

Sen. Davis worked hard for all Texans in Austin during the last session.

She was honored as Freshman Lawmaker of the Year in 2009 by Texas Monthly magazine and was named Rookie of The Year by AARP. She earned those honors by starting on her first day in Austin studying and writing legislation on issues that are important to all of us: utilities, insurance, women’s issues and education funding and children’s healthcare.

She was able to get a lot of work done by working with her peers from both sides of the aisle. She will be able to get even more done this session because of her seniority, and that is one of many good reasons for sending her back.

Perry on Obama

In a TV interview, Gov. Rick Perry said he doesn’t “have a clue” about what President Barack Obama’s birth certificate says. This is a clue to us that he doesn’t look at pictures in newspapers and magazines or he is being dishonest.

Perry is clueless about too many things to be a Republican presidential candidate. But Republicans will hold their noses and vote for him anyway. Again. Go figure.

Serving needy Texans (Star-Telegram)

Some politicians love making tough decisions — tough on the poor, hungry, sick and old.
One in six Texans is in need.
Why waste $21 billion on “business development” (travel, fancy hotels, lavish meals and drinks, gifts and who knows what)? (See: “State’s funds for economic development face cutbacks,” Jan. 31)
It’s not as if heads of big businesses don’t know we’re here. Spend this tax money on Texans in need.

Tucson memorial (Star-Telegram)

Obama sounded like a man of faith when he told us to “let us use this occasion to expand our moral imaginations.” A person of faith believes as he does: “[W]hat matters is how well we have loved and what small part we have played in bettering the lives of others.”
He sounded like a committed American when he said “we should be willing to challenge old assumptions in order to lessen the prospects of violence in the future.”
But he sounded like the president of the United States when he said “we should do everything we can to make sure this country lives up to our children’s expectations.”
I thank him for his most inspiring words.

Deadly debris (Star-Telegram)

Radioactive trash is deadly for centuries, if not hundreds of centuries. What do we Texans gain by saving someone else’s radioactive trash in our back yard? (See: “Judge blocks panel vote on expanding nuclear waste dump in Texas,” Friday)
Don’t mess with Texans. Save deadly trash in the back yards of those who make it.

Parade etiquette (Star-Telegram)

Jesus, God and Santa Claus were not Democrat, Republican or for the Tea Party. A Christmas parade is no place to have political floats, banners or any other kind of promotion.

Holiday, not Politics (Star-Telegram)

My family, friends and everyone in earshot of us complained about the Tea Party’s presence in the Grapevine Christmas Parade. While Democrats are excluded from paying for and working a voter registration booth at city festivals next to jewelry sales and car dealerships, another partisan group yells “go Tea Party” at a nonpolitical holiday event. Double standards aside, a Christmas celebration is not the place for politics.
